How To Choose From The Many Different Types Of Material Conveyor
A material conveyor can be a great bonus to any business in the manufacturing, construction or warehousing sectors, which has a need to move items quickly from one place to another. These items can be just about anything, from sand and dirt used in the construction of buildings to the empty cartons which are left when goods are left for storage. Many conveyor systems are even set up for the sole purpose of transporting waste material, as dealing with this can be one of the most wasteful activities in a business.
The type of material conveyor which is used in construction differs considerably from the other conveyor systems. The dirt conveyor is a thin metal frame with several buckets lined up one after the other. These buckets are loosely attached to the frame, allowing them to hang free and be upright no matter what angle the frame is set at. This unique arrangement allows the material which is placed into the buckets to be transported not just over distance but over height as well.
In a factory or warehouse situation, a different solution is needed, and there are many which are possible. The simplest is any variation of the common rubber based conveyor belt which is so often found in supermarkets. Virtually any industrial application will need a longer and more sturdy belt than this, but the principle is the same. A lot of man hours can be saved by having one batch of work ready to be done as soon as the current job is completed. The only ongoing expenses to run this system are the electricity it consumes and the servicing charges, although there is of course expense in setting the system up.
A roller based system can operate in a very similar way, although there are significant advantages and disadvantages. The belt driven system is far more suitable for anyone who has fragile items to move, as roller based systems continually jolt the item as it moves along. On the plus side, roller based systems are far easier to service and maintain, as more of the parts are open and visible. When servicing needs to be carried out, it will take less time, and when a repair is needed it will be easier to diagnose the fault.
If you are looking for the most economical material conveyor, you will find it in one of the gravity based solutions. These are best suited to a situation where goods have to be transported for a very short distance, and preferably to a lower level of the building. If the transportation is needed across the same level, gravity will not work so you need some kind of manual intervention. This is not ideal as it is contrary to the purpose of having a mechanical conveyor in the first place. Although it is cheaper to run, a gravity system can be harder to install than an electrical material conveyor.
